Pres. Duterte Orders Six A-29 "Super Tucano" Light Attack Aircraft for AFP Modernization Program

The administration of Pres. Rody Duterte is now aiming for a modern Armed Forces of the Philippines as the chief executive confirmed the government's order of six A-29 "Super Tucanos" light attack aircraft as part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) modernization program.


Aside from the light attack aircraft, the Department of National Defense will also armed the existing air assets the 12 South Korean-made FA-50PH "Fighting Eagle" jet which is currently being used as a fighter and attack aircraft.

The DND signed a contract for the procurement of AIM-9 "Sidewinder" air-to-air missiles which will be used to arm the existing jet fighters of the Philippine Air Force (PAF).

The AFP also revealed that the light attack aircraft Super Tucano will be purchased by the Duterte administration from the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer Defense and Security.


DND Public Affairs Office Chief Arsenio Andolong said the Philippines would acquire six Super Tucanos worth P4,968,000,000. All founds would be sourced from the AFP Modernization Act Trust Fund. There is already a Notice to Proceed for the said project after it was issued during the first week of December.

The DND Public Affairs Office Chief Andolong was quoted as saying "The aircraft that was selected after a rigorous public bidding process that was participated in by several manufacturers from different countries was the Super Tucano A-29, which is compliant with the stringent technical specifications required by the PAF," Andolong said.

Based upon the initial information received by the DND public affairs they revealed that the A-29 is durable, versatile, and highly advanced aircraft capable of carrying out a wide range of missions. "(It can) even (operate) on unimproved runways," the DND added.


The Duterte admin also revealed that the deliveries of the highly anticipated aircraft to boost the country's air power are expected to commence on 2019.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines stated that the Super Tucanos are expected to augment or even replace the eight to 10 ageing Rockwell OV-10 "Bronco" attack planes being used by the PAF in close-air support missions.

DNDP Public Affairs Office Chief Andolong also noted that the new air assets, Super Tucanos would be turned over and operated by the PAF's 15th Strike Wing based in Sangley Point, Cavite City.
