Crime Eases in the Philippines for 2017 Under the Leadership of Pres. Rody Duterte

The Philippines made some improvements in terms of crime reduction as crime fell more than one-fifth in the country this 2017 under the leadership of Pres. Rody Duterte, delighting the public and indicating that perhaps the President's war against drugs, which stirred international outrage over human rights issues is indeed deterring crime.

According to the Philippine National Police, illegal acts against people and property declined 21.8 percent from January through November 2017, compared to the same period of 2016.

Political Analyst and La Salle Professor Antonio Contreras explained that the figure points to progress in Pres. Duterte's controversial anti-drug campaign as well as "overall effort by police," Contreras said.

The veteran political science professor was quoted as saying "That's a lot, so that means an indication that the efforts are working," Contreras said. He expects the government and social media fans will use the data to emphasize that point. "It's going to be used and spun by the supporters," he said.

Based upon the report of the PNP, cited by domestic media indicates that the total number of reported crimes used for statistical purposes fell to 100,668 in the first 11 months of the year 2017. Only homicides went up.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque on his part told reporters in an interview that Philippine crime had gone down 35 percent but did not divulge further the complete details of the report.

Filipinos in general are saying through various public opinion surveys that they feel safer under the administration of Pres. Rody Duterte particularly on his war on illegal drugs. The people's support also allowed the President to push back against critics as well as human rights advocacy groups and foreign governments that denounce letting the police kill suspected drug dealers on sight.

Under the leadership of Pres. Rody Duterte common Filipinos often say their neighborhoods are safer now compared to the previous years, with fewer burglaries, theft and traffic crimes as well as street side drug deals.
