Government Forces Killed More Than 80 Maute Snipers in Marawi City

The government forces confirmed through the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Western Mindanao Command (WestminCom) Chief Lt. Gen. Carlito Galvez that they have killed more than 80 Maute snipers since the fighting broke out in Marawi City in the past three weeks.

According to the WestMinCom chief, despite difficulties face by the ground forces against Maute terrorists who already controlled some high-rise buildings in some areas of the city, the Armed Forces are making progress and neutralized the enemy.

Lt. Gen. Galvez admitted that it is very difficult to contained some high-rise buildings because of the presence of Maute snipers who already positioned in the area. He was quoted as saying "Once na naghawak sila (terrorists) ng isang city, kukunin nila yung high ground. Ang hirap kunin yung mga high rise building, ang hirap," Galvez said.

The WestMinCom chief added further that "Kung control mo yung high rise building, control mo yung area. So unti-unti naming kinukuha yung mga high rise na iyun. Para kung makuha na namin at least medyo.... maganda na yung ano."

Lt. Galvez then confirmed the number of sniper killed by government troops "Imagine, we have already killed more than 80 of their snipers. It only means they are getting weaker,” he added.

The veteran commander also revealed that out of the 96 barangays located in the eastern side of Marawi, the Maute Group still has a stronghold over four barangays but did not revealed the names of the particular barangay where the Maute's are now hiding.

Based upon the estimates of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, there are still 150 to 200 Maute Group terrorists hiding in the city, waging war with the military. Right now the commander of WestMinCom said that is hard to make any statements on when they could finish off the enemy and finally clear Marawi City of terrorists.
