DOTr & DPWH Opens NAIA Expressway Phase II Christmas Lane

One of the major infrastructure project of former Pres. Arroyo followed by Pres. Aquino and finally fast-tracked by the Duterte administration, the NAIA Expressway (NAIA-X) Phase II Christmas Lane opens to the public by two lead agencies, the Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

On Wednesday, December 20, 2016 the DPWH and the DOTr opened a partial segment of the NAIA Expressway Christmas Lane which would provide access from Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard to NAIA Terminal 3 and Skyway.

According to DPWH Sec. Mark Villar, the first phase of the NAIA Expressway Phase II is expected to reduce travel time by at least 40%. The second phase of construction is still ongoing, it would provide easier access to the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX).

In an interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA), DOTr Sec. Arthur Tugade said that "This will greatly help our public for the Christmas season as this will further improve traffic flow," the DOTR chief said as he led the final inspection and ceremonial opening expressway with DPWH Sec. Mark Villar.

DPWH Sec. Mark Villar for his part expects that full access of the NAIA Expressway will be completed by the first quarter of 2017.

The Philippine National government spend around P20.45-billion for the said infrastructure project, the NAIA Expressway, a four-lane, 12.65 kilometer elevated expressway and 2.22-kilometer at-grade traversing Sales Avenue, Andrews Avenue, Paranaque, MIAA Road and Diosdado Macapagal Blvd.

The DPWH and the DOTr also noted that once all phases are completed, the Expressway Project is expected to provide easy access to and from NAIA Terminals 1,2,3, and 4 and will interface with SLEX through Sales Interchange, Manila Cavite Toll Expressway (CAVITEX), and Macapagal Boulevard.

The construction of the NAIA Expressway Phase II was started during the term of Pres. Aquino last 2012 but the original idea of building the project is credited to the Arroyo Administration. The Aquino admin failed to finish the project after they promised to make complete it before 2015.

During the term of Pres. Arroyo last 2009, she inaugurated the P1-billion NAIA Expressway Project, running 1.5 to 2 kilometers that benefits the residents of Pasay, Taguig and Makati City. The project links roads leading to NAIA and the Domestic Airport.
