Former Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago Dies at 71 Due to Cancer

One of the country's most prominent and brilliant lawmaker Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago dies at the age of 71. She succumbed to cancer on Thursday morning as confirmed by her husband Atty. Jun Santiago.

The husband of the popular senator was quoted as saying "She died peacefully in her sleep this morning," Atty. Santiago said.

Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago, one of the losing presidential candidate during the 2016 national election passed away while confined at the St. Luke's Medical Center in Bonifacio Global City.

According to the families of the late senator, her remains will be brought to Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral in Cubao, Quezon City.

Before the untimely death of the brilliant senator, earlier this month, she was brought to St. Luke's Medical Center for cancer treatment, she stayed at the hospital until her death according to the confirmation made by Atty. Santiago.

Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago, the closest rival of former Pres. Ramos during the 1992 national elections was born in Iloilo City on June 15, 1945. She also tried her luck during the 1998 national election but she was one of the defeated candidate which was won by Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada.

The brilliant lawmaker has been dubbed as the "Iron Lady of Asia" for her impressive credentials as a public servant. She was one of the few lawmakers who served in all the branches of government from the Judicial, Executive and Legislative Department.

Aside from the confirmations made by the families of Sen. Miriam Santiago, her official Twitter account also posted a message midmorning informing the Filipino public that the former senator died at around 8:52 AM.
