Coach Chot Reyes thanks PBA for the full support of the Gilas-Pilipinas

Philippine Basketball Association made a great backing on the Gilas-Pilipinas as it supports the National team's campaign in the FIBA World Cup in Spain and the Asian Games in Korea.

With this, coach Chot Reyes expressed his appreciation for the PBA board's decision to compress the league's season to allow the national squad to compete in this year's FIBA Asia Cup in Wuhan, China.

The outspoken national coach, though, can only hope the Gilas players won't be "burned out" once the PBA season is over, especially those on teams which will make the finals of the season-ending Governors Cup.

"Of course, I am appreciative (of the PBA's board's decision). I just hope the Gilas players who make the (Governors Cup) Finals don't get burned out," Reyes told

The fifth edition of FIBA Asia Cup will be held on July 11-19, with the winner qualifying automatically for the FIBA Asia men's championships next year.

Stint in the FIBA Asia Cup
On Thursday, PBA commissioner Chito Salud said that instead of allowing Gilas to play as a guest team in the Governors Cup, the league will compress its season to allow the national team to compete in Wuhan.

Salud also explained that the compressed schedule could possibly mean five PBA game days every week to fast-track the season-ending conference, which is expected to end by July 9.

Reyes said the Wuhan tournament will give him the opportunity to build chemistry for Gilas, which recently added five players from the pool, namely Jared Dillinger of Meralco, Rain or Shine gunner Paul Lee and big man Beau Belga, who was recalled to the pool but was trimmed down to three following the withdrawal of San Miguel's Marcio Lassiter and Greg Slaughter of Ginebra.

"It's a (good) chance to play together," added Reyes, who'll be leading the national squad for the first time since steering the country back to the FIBAWorld Cup after finishing a surprising second to Iran in last year's FIBA Asia men's championships in Manila.

Gilas Pilipinas will also be out to improve on its fourth place performance in the 2012 edition of the Fiba Asia Cup held in Tokyo, Japan.

The opposition though won't be easy, according to Reyes, because of the presence of national teams from other Asian countries.

And with the full backing, expect the Gilas Boys to pay the PBA on what the latter have done to them.
