The Philippine National Police (PNP) have arrested suspected members of a gunrunning syndicate believed to be the gun supplier of the Maute Group. PNP Chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa said among those arrested was the leader of the group who was identified as Romel Litan.

Aside from Litan, other suspected members of the gunrunning syndicate are Angelo Magcamit, Ramil Quinones and Christian Rey Quinones.

The PNP reported that the suspects were arrested by operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Laguna over the weekend. The arrest of the gunrunning syndicate came out a few days after Pres. Duterte ordered to investigate the gun suppliers of the terrorist groups.

According to CIDG Director Chief Superintendent Roel Obusan said that the suspect Romel Litan was initially charged with illegall manufacturing of firearms. The CIDG are still trying to secure evidence that may permit them to file rebellion charges against the suspects.

Gen. dela Rosa presented the four suspects at Camp Crame on Tuesday along with at least 30 firearms, hundreds of gun parts, accessories and ammunition.

Among the seized firearms from the suspects were counterfeit Spike’s Tactical 5.56 caliber rifles and rifle suppressors similar to those being used by the Maute group’s snipers in Marawi City.

The CIDG Chief also explained that the parts used by the group in the counterfeit Spike’s Tactical rifles were shipped from the United States. Chief Supt. Obusan also said that the group could sell the Spike’s rifles at P100,000 each, which is below the market price of P150,000.

The PNP Chief also noted that the CIDG is pursuing leads that may lead to the conduit between the syndicate and the Maute group, who were found to have some of Litan’s firearms in their hideouts in Marawi City.
