Farmers Occupy Hacienda Luisita by Breaking its Walls Five Years After the Landmark SC Decision

The controversial property of the Cojuangco-Aquino clan, portion of Hacienda Luisita came under fire after farmers and supporters of the Unyon ng mga Manggagawa sa Agrikultura (UMA) and other militant organizations broke the walls of the property five years after the landmark Supreme Court decision favoring the farmers groups.

Hundreds of protesters converged near a walled parcel of land allegedly belonging to the Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC). The protesters was able to bring down an estimated 100 meters of the walls by using the farmers mallet and they also used a farm tractor.

According to the farmers group the land should have been distributed five (5) years ago based upon the decision released by the Supreme Court of the Philippines but due to the alleged connections of the Aquino family during the previous administration, the land are still under the hands of the Hacienda.

Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) labor leader stated that the 348 hectare land should have been distributed as ruled by the Supreme Court.

The property attacked by the labor groups was excluded from distribution to farmers due to land conversion order granted to Hacienda Luisita Incorporated in 1996.

Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Secretary Rafael Mariano already revoked the conversion order on February 2017. The cancellation of the conversion order granted last 1996 was due to a complaint filed by farmers group AMBALA in 2012.

RCBC already released a statement that the acquired land from Hacienda Luisita or from Luisita Industrial Park Corp. last November 25, 2004, served as payment of Hacienda for a P431.7 million loan obligation.

The company claimed that the property should be exempted from the distribution plans as they were "innocent purchasers," that had nothing to do with the agrarian dispute.
