The controversial list, however, was questioned by some of the President's detractors and political opponents as they noted that there are names included in the list who already passed away.
President Rody Duterte explained to the media and to the Filipino people the main reasons about the inclusion of officials who were already dead during the time of announcement.
Aside from netizens and other individuals who questioned the veracity of the list, Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno also noted in a letter to him that one of the judges mentioned had died eight years ago.
The 71-year-old President replied by saying that "Sabi niya, 'di ko alam kung bakit ganito, 'yung ibang judges, patay na o napaalis na sa pwesto for ignorance of the law or maybe for graft and corruption," he said
The speech of Pres. Duterte was delivered before the 4th Infantry Division at Camp Evangelista in Cagayan de Oro City.
"Bakit? I just wanted to impress to the public na noon pa alam na namin ang negosyo ninyo. Since your name is there leave it, and I will publish it the way it is there. Bakit ko i-exempt ang namatay?" Duterte added.
The president said he trusts the work done by Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) chief Dir. Isidro Lapena and National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana in coming up with the list.
Chief Justice Sereno made public her letter to Pres. Duterte as he told the President that the high tribunal "would consider it important" to know the source and basis of his list. The Chief Justice also added that the "premature" announcement may have unwarranted effect on the judge's credibility.
