$1-Billion Bridge Connecting Four Visayas Islands to be Completed Within Pres. Duterte's Term

Secretary of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar said during an interview with the local media in Bacolod City that the $1-Billion Bridge connecting the four islands in the Visayas is expected to be completed within the term of Pres. Rody Duterte.

According to Sec. Villar the DPWH will fast-track the project and stated that the Iloilo-Guimaras-Negros-Cebu Link Bridge is considered as the "most ambitious bridge program in the history of our nation."

Sec. Villar, the son of billionaire real-estate investor Manny Villar, along with National Economic and Development Authority Director General Ernesto Pernia, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, and Bases Conversation and Development Authority President and Chief Executive Officer Vivencio Dizon, held a press conference to bare the nine infrastructure projects of the Duterte administration, which will start construction next year.

The Duterte administration wants to decongest Metro Manila and disperse the development in the regions. Sec. Villar stated that the Iloilo-Guimaras-Negros-Cebu Link Bridge Project, after its completion, is seen to replace San Juanico Bridge, which links Samar and Leyte, ad the longest bridge in the country.

Sec. Mark Villar also revealed during a press conference that the length of the bridges that will connect Iloilo, Guimaras, Negros and Cebu, ranges from two to 10 kilometers.

The DPWH also noted that 25 percent of the budget is allocated to the nationwide decongestion program of the Duterte administration while NEDA Chief Pernia said the infrastructure projects including the Visayas Bridge, have gone through the "eye of the needled" and are ready to be implemented by the concerned agencies next year.

The Iloilo-Guimaras-Negros-Cebu Link Bridge Project are already in the state of bidding, adding that it will generate more jobs once the construction begins. Pernial also added that the "work regimne of 24 hours a day, seven days a week" will hasten the construction of the infrastructure projects.
