Sen. Lacson Slams Senators Who Opposed Martial Law Declaration in Mindanao Amid Marawi City Crisis


Former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief and now lawmaker, Sen. Panfilo "Ping" Lacson slammed his collegue in the Philippine Senate who opposed the Martial Law declaration of the Duterte administration in Mindanao amid the Marawi City crisis.


According to Sen. Lacson during an interview on Wednesday he said that his colleagues who opposed martial law, didn't understand the gravity of the threat in Mindanao. He also noted that his colleagues in the Senate simply opposed anything that Pres. Duterte does because they belong to the opposition.

Sen. Lacson was quoted as saying "Our colleagues who still oppose the martial law proclamation either did not understand the gravity of the security threat posed by the rebellion in the south, or they are simply opposed to anything that President Duterte does or acts on," Lacson said.

The veteran lawmaker also noted that the video released by the Associated Press, made him support the declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao.


In the said video released online by the Associated Press during the executive caucus with security officials and senators, they show a video footage of a secret meetings of insurgents led by Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon, the appointed "emir" of Islamic State in Southeast Asia, as they planned to attack Marawi City.

Sen. Lacson was one of the senators who signed the senate resolution expressing support for the declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao.

A total of eight senators didn't signed the Senate Resolution, they are Sen. Francis Pangilinan, Sen. Franklin Drilon, Sen. Bam Aquino, Sen. Leila De Lima, Sen. Risa Hontiveros, Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, Sen. Grace Poe and Sen. Francis Escudero.

The members of the Minority in the Senate also vowed to block any attempts of the government to declare Martial Law nationwide.

The senators who voted in favor of the Martial Law declaration are: Senators Ping Lacson, Sonny Angara, Nancy Binay, JV Ejercito, Gringo Honasan, Loren Legarda, Koko Pimentel, Cynthia Villar, Joel Villanueva, Tito Sotto, Richard Gordon, Migz Zubiri, Manny Pacquiao, Win Gatchalian, and Ralph Recto.
