Pres. Duterte Confirms that Terrorism in the Philippines is Funded by Drug Money


The tough-talking President of the Republic of the Philippines, Pres. Rody Duterte confirmed during a speech that the illegal drug trade fuels local terror groups' activities in the country. Pres. Duterte admitted the connections between drugs and terrorists during a speech at the 119th Philippine Navy anniversary in Davao City.



Pres. Duterte was quoted as saying "Hinayaan kasi natin ang droga (We let it thrive). So there was a time and until now that the terrorism activities in the Philippines is funded and fueled by drug money," Duterte said.

According to Pres. Duterte, the Islamic City of Marawi is now into its second week of fighting between the Maute group and government troops, is a "bedrock" for shabu manufacturing, he stated. Aside from Pres. Duterte, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana also confirmed that the Maute group is indeed involved in illegal drugs.

The Defense secretary already mentioned an unnamed Maute family member who served as Mayor was listed on President's "narcolist" of politicians in the illegal drug trade. "The proceeds of the narcotics are being used for these terroristic activities there," Lorenzana said.

Pres. Duterte's claim of large-scale drug manufacturing in Marawi, government forces has received reports that the supply of shabu being distributed in Mindanao were coming from Lanao del Sur.


Since declaring the war against illegal drugs, the President revealed that due to his mission to eradicate drugs, most manufacturers sought help and protection of terror groups in Mindanao.

"Christian and the Moro, who were into shabu sought sanctuary amongst the terrorists for protection and to ensure the success of their business," he said.

PNP Chief Ronald Dela Rosa also hinted that drug trade is funding Maute operations in Mindanao. The ISIS-inspired Maute Group stormed Marawi City, the capital of Lanao del Sur on May 23, prompting the President to declare Martial Law in the entire Mindanao.
