Netizen Questions CHR Chairman Gascon's Silence on Marawi Terrorist Attack

One of the country's most prominent critics of Pres. Rody Duterte, Commission on Human Rights (CHR) chairman Jose Luis Martin Gascon or Chito Gascon came under fire on social media after some netizens took notice of his silence in the recent terrorist attack of the Maute Group in Marawi City.

CHR Chairman Gascon had long criticized Pres. Rody Duterte's handling of the country's war on illegal drugs as he accused the President of allegedly committing human rights abuses leading to the deaths of thousands of Filipinos.

One of the netizen who took notice of the CHR silence during the past few days particularly during the attack in Marawi City is concerned netizen Denn Amacio Meneses who question why CHR chairman Gascon has kept mum on the human rights violations committed by the terrorist groups that wreak havoc in Marawi City.

The concerned netizen pointed out how the CHR was established during the year 1987, the commission was created with the duty to "investigate, on its own or complaint by any party, ALL FORMS of human rights violations involving civil and political rights."

Due to the silence of the CHR in the recent Marawi City crisis, Meneses casted doubt on the seemingly one-sided effort of the CHR to probe only the human rights abuses of the Duterte administration but did not took time to look at the victims of the Maute siege in Marawi City.

Meneses also pointed out that it is a form of "discrimination" on the part of the CHR whichis an abuse under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Here's the Complete Statement of Denn Amacio Menese:

The Commission on Human Rights has been actively, even aggressively, criticizing President Duterte from Day One but is noticeably silent on atrocities being committed by criminal elements and terrorist groups, even going as far as defending their so-called rights while ignoring their crimes and the victims of such crimes.

Let's see. The CHR was created in 1987 as "an independent office mandated to investigate complaints of human rights violations, promote the protection of, respect for and the enhancements of the people's human rights including civil and political rights."

Nowhere is it specifically stated, Mr Gascon, that the Commission is tasked to investigate human rights abuses committed ONLY by the government, i.e. police, military. "Investigate, on its own or on complaint by any party, ALL FORMS of human rights violations involving civil and political rights."

So why being selective, CHR? EVERYONE has the right to life, as contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. And if you are taking sides, you yourselves are committing an ABUSE, which is DISCRIMINATION.
