DSWD Sec. Taguiwalo Denies Rappler's Report of 59 Deaths in Marawi Evacuation Centers

Controversial news agency Rappler strikes anew with another alleged fake news spreading like wildfire on various platforms as they reported a total of 59 Marawi evacuees who allegedly died in evacuation center. DSWD Secretary Judy Taguiwalo calls the attention of Rappler for their misleading information.

According to Sec. Taguiwalo, the Department of Health (DOH) denied the report posted by Rappler and other news outlet regarding the number of deaths in evacuation center as she noted that even DOH Sec. Ubial denied the reports of the 59 alleged deaths in evacuation centers.

DSWD Sec. Judy Taguiwalo took to Facebook and denied the reports released by Rappler. She was quoted as saying:

"DOH Secretary Ubial calls the attention of the incorrect information on deaths in the evacuation camps reported by Rappler. 'The information of Rappler of 59 deaths in Evacuation Centers in Marawi is wrong! Totally and intentionally gave wrong numbers! We reviewed video I clearly said no deaths in Evacuation Centers! There were 19 deaths in hospitals where bakwits were referred but deaths were due to pre-existing health conditions such as cancer'"

Rappler reported that at least 59 evacuees from conflict-torn Marawi City have died of dehydration and other health-related causes, quoting the statement of Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial on Thursday, June 15.

The Department of Health already denied the reports released by Rappler after they were interviewed by the official Philippine News Agency (PNA).

According to Sec. Ubial the information that came out in some media reports, which cited such number of deaths, were totally wrong and she had never said them.

She also said she had reviewed the video and clearly showed she said that there were no deaths in evacuation centers," said Ubial.
