DPWH Sec. Mark Villar Announce Opening of Tacloban By-Pass Road this Coming April 2017

Secretary Mark Villar of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced through his official Facebook Page that the Tacloban By-Pass Road will be open to the public by April 2017. Once the project will be completed it is expected to reduce travel time from Palo to Tacloban by over 60%.

The controversial secretary of the DPWH who was once dubbed by Pres. Duterte's critics as ill-equipped to handle the agency barred by corruption allegations during the previous administration is now considered as one of the most hardworking Cabinet Members with numerous belts of achievements in just a few months of serving as DPWH head.

According to DPWH Sec. Mark Villar "the Tacloban City By-Pass Road, which will start at Brgy. Tigbao in Tacloban City and end at Brgy. Caibaan, was constructed to decongest traffic along Daang Maharlika Highway, which has a total annual average daily traffic of 11,393,” Villar said

The highly anticipated DPWH project will ease traffic congestion of the City Proper of Tacloban and will provide an alternative route traversing Barangays Abuca, Apitong, and Caibaan.

Sec. Villar noted that a total of P542.48 million was used to fund the project which involves the construction and concreting of a 6.4 kilometer four lane road, paving of shoulders and slope protection works.

Once complete the by-pass road is expected to reduce travel time from 1 ½ hours to 30 minutes. It is also expected not only to ease traffic congestion in Tacloban but will also increase accessibility of road network and strengthen trade in the area. It is expected to benefit at least a thousand motorists per day.
