Pres. Duterte Slams Inquirer Reporter on People Power Warning

The President of the Republic of the Philippines, Pres. Rody Duterte slams the warning of a reporter from Philippine Daily Inquirer who warned the  President of a possible people. The statement was made by Pres. Duterte during a speech in Davao City on Friday referring to an article written on national paper about the possibility of people power.

Pres. Duterte was quoted as saying "Ako naman ho, I read it from an overseas-based opinion writer about me getting ousted by a people power. Be my guest. I don't give a shit," the first President from Mindanao said.

Although the former Mayor of Davao City did not name the columnist, most netizens commented that the statement was in apparent reference to Amando Doronilla, who published a column on Friday's Philippine Daily Inquirer titled: "Duterte Warned of People Power."

Based upon the history of the Philippines, the People Power term was first used during the Marcos presidency when Pres. Ferdinand E. Marcos was deposed by a peaceful 1986 EDSA Revolution.

The Inquirer columnist Doronilla quoted US Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Russel who stated "I think it would be a serious mistake in a democratic country like the Philippines to underestimate the power of the public's affinity for the US. That's people power."

In answering criticisms against the Duterte administration, the President has repeatedly said that he is willing to "risk the presidency" to achieve the reforms he was eyeing for the Philippines and even lashed out against the US and EU over criticisms of his administration's drug campaign.

During the speech of Duterte in reference to the possible people power, the President was quoted as saying "Basta ako magtrabaho. If I am there for one year only, so be it. It's already written in my destiny that na ma-president ka one year. If I am ousted, then it's written in the winds that I am there and I will be ousted. And if I die, with no reason that it is really a part of your territory of your life in this world. So it does not really bother me at all," Duterte said.
