Pres. Duterte the First Philippine President who Visited Batanes to Assess the Typhoon Damage

The First President from Mindanao, former Mayor of Davao City now President Rody Duterte made history once again as he became the first Philippine President who visited the island province of Batanes to assess the damages of a typhoon that hit the province earlier.

Batanes is located  approximately 162 kilometres (101 mi) north of the mainland Luzon and also closed to neighboring Taiwan which is located about 190 kilometers (120 miles).

Despite the fact that President Rody Duterte only ranked fourth in the Province of Batanes during the last elections but putting aside his political past, he personally visited the island province of Batanes which is also considered as the smallest province both in population and land area.

The visit of the 70-year-old President Duterte to the province of Batanes marked the first time that a Philippine President set foot in the island to assess the damages brought by a typhoon. Last month the island province was battered by typhoon Ferdie.

Typhoon Ferdie destroyed homes and infrastructure in Batanes, toppled utility lines and laid waste to crops resulting in an estimated damage worth around P800 million.

Pres. Duterte also made a speech during his visit to Batanes wherein he explained the administration's campaign against illegal drugs and even advised all the official of the province to stop corruption and streamlined the government services.
