AFP Reports: 94 Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) Members Neutralized

Under the administration of President Rody Duterte, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) intensified their operations against the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) resulting a total of 94 ASG members neutralized during 54 clashes.

According to AFP Chief Gen. Ricardo Visaya at least 56 ASG members were killed during 54 clashes, 21 ASG members surrendered and 12 were either captured or arrested and five (5) were wounded.

Based upon the reports presented by the AFP to the Philippine media, two prominent ASG leaders namely Nelson Muktadil, Braun Muktadil and sub-leader Mohammad Said were among the terrorists killed, their bodies were recovered by the elements of the AFP during the intense combat as well as during search and retrieval operations.

Aside from the identified Abu Sayyaf leaders, three other ASG leaders were killed during operations but were not identified because their bodies were dragged by their fleeing comrades. Military also reported that the bodies had been buried in known locations in keeping with Muslim customs.

During the first 100 days of the Duterte administration, Defense Sec. Delfin Lorenzana said that he military conducted 575 massive focused operations, 426 of which were directed against bandits and allied terrorist groups.

The AFP also revealed that aside from pursuing the Abu Sayyaf Group, the AFP also launched similar crackdowns against terrorists groups in Central Mindanao by conducting a total of 44 combat operations against the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and other foreign and local terrorists, particularly the Maute Group.
