Hybrid Electric Road Train to be Tested in Cebu City

The "Queen City of the South," Cebu City will experience first-hand a hybrid electric road train that will be tested in the city next month according to City Transportation Office head Rafael Yap in an interview with the local media in Cebu City.

According to Rafael Yap, the Department of Science and Technology will send a prototype of the hybrid train September for a test drive in the city's streets. The project is one of the priority mass transport solution of Pres. Rody Duterte's administration.

The City Transportation Head noted that the reason why the DOST are sending the road train to Cebu City is to promote the said project.

Last year, some representatives of the Cebu City LGU and the DOST signed a memorandum of understanding to address the concern on urbanized metropolis, specifically on traffic congestion, through the introduction of a hybrid electric road train.

The Hybrid Electric Road Train is just one of the proposed new mode of transport for Cebu City which also aims of having their very own Light Rail Transit system and the Bus Rapid Transit, among others.

The hybrid electric road train is reportedly 40-meter long and is composed of five interconnected fully air-conditioned coaches, four of which can accommodate 60 passengers each, for a total of 240 commuters per ride.

The train is mainly powered by hybrid diesel fuel and electric-powered battery, it will run at a speed of 50 kilometers per hour
