Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is the only presidential candidate from the Philippines who is featured in the world-renowned Al Jazeera. Some netizens noted that maybe the main reason why the mayor was featured by network because of his popularity in the international communities, particularly the millions of Filipinos working and living abroad.

According to Al Jazeera reporter Steve Chao, Mayor Rody Duterte has won legions of fans from transforming Davao City from a city plagued by drugs, gangs and murders into one of the country's safest.

The term given to Mayor Duterte as the "Donald Trump of the Philippines" was first coined by an author and investigative journalist Marites Vitug.

Marites Vitug was quoted as saying  "We like to compare him to Trump of the US because he likes to shock with his statements. He can be very irreverent and very reckless," she says.

Like US presidential candidate Donald Trump, Duterte knows how to make headlines, often using controversial claims to challenge the political establishment.
