Pres. Duterte Officially Declares Liberation of Marawi City from Terrorists

The tough-talking President of the Republic of the Philippines, Pres. Rody Duterte officially declares the liberation of Marawi City from terrorists as he declared Marawi is free from "terrorist influence," although military operations continue to ensure all terrorists have been flushed out.

Pres. Duterte was quoted as saying "I hereby declare Marawi City liberated from the terrorist influence that marks the beginning of rehabilitation of Marawi," the President said during his latest visit to the conflict area.

The President's declaration of the liberation of Marawi City doesn't mean that the war is already over, but it will only take "a matter of days."

Col Romeo Brawner, Deputy Commander of Joint Task Force Ranao was quoted as saying "The declaration of the liberation of Marawi is a strategic statement, meaning it's a message that we want to tell the world, that tapos na po itong problema ng Maute-ISIS. They cannot be victorious anymore. Wala na po, patapos na po" Brawner said.

Col. Brawner also noted that the death of terrorist leaders Omar Maute and Isnilon Hapilon on Monday led to Marawi's liberation. The two most wanted terrorists were killed in the main battle zone of Marawi City, the provincial capital of the Province of Lanao del Sur.

The neutralization of terrorist leaders Omar Maute and Isnilon Hapilon doesn't meant that the military already achieved their victory against terrorists but they are just gaining grounds and footholds in Marawi City as they are still after Dr. Mahmud Ahmad, a Malaysian terrorist who joined the ISIS-inspired Maute Group and supposedly funded the Marawi attack.

The Marawi siege already resulted to a total of 847 terrorists, 163 government troops, and 47 civilians were killed in the predominantly-Muslim community since May 23, when the battle between troops and terrorists began, prompting the President to declare Martial Law in Mindanao.

The Philippine government also called for the understanding of over 300,000 displaced residents, saying they cannot return to their homes yet until the military finishes clearing Marawi of terrorists and explosives.

According to Armed Forces spokesperson Major General Restituto Padilla an estimated 20 Maute terrorists are still holding over 20 hostages inside the battle zone in Marawi City.
