According to Senior Supt. Jason de Guzman, head of the Misamis Occidental Provincial Police Office, the CIDG had asked for help of the local police to serve a warrant, but the combined team was immediately greeted with gunfire as they approached the area in San Roque Lawis district.

Based upon the initial reports of the PNP the mayor himself was gunned down, along with his wife Susan and sibling board member Octavio Parojinog. Four of the fatalities were members of a local auxiliary force, and it was unclear if they were killed while defending the mayor.

Aside from Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog, his daughter Vice Mayor Nova Parojinog, who was reportedly at the scene of the incident was unharmed but was detained and under investigation by police authorities.

The PNP also noted that there were three areas were apparently covered by the search warrant: the Mayor's house in Barangay San Roque in Lawis, the home of ex-board member and current city councilor Ardot Parojinog, and the mayor's farm in Barangay Cogon.

During the raid "bundles of cash and shabu" were confiscated by authorities after they were found in the mayor's house along with some guns. In the raid of Councilor Ardot Parojinog's house, a shotgun, three rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launchers, rifles and rifle ammunition were allegedly found.

The CIDG also noted that an assortment of guns, including M-16s and .45 caliber pistols were found along with some grenades, drugs and money but they are still doing an inventory of firearms, ammunition and grenades.

During one of Pres. Rody Duterte's speech he had once called out Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog to surrender more guns after the President tagged Parojinog as among those with links to certain drug groups.

The Parojinog family of Ozamiz City are very popular political clan that have held sway in the City for the past few decades despite recurrent talk of their alleged links to illegal gambling and criminal gangs.
