Pres. Duterte & PM Abe to Sign Deal for the First Mega Manila Subway System Worth P227-Billion


The tough-talking President of the Republic of the Philippines and His Excellency the Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is set to sign the deal which will pave the way for the First Mega Manila Subway System.


Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade revealed during the "Dutertenomics" forum at Conrad Hotel in Manila that Pres. Duterte and PM Shinzo Abe will sign the deal in November this year, the agreement between the Philippines and Japan would jump-start the construction of the country's first subway system.

The administration of Pres. Rody Duterte presented and showcased the priority projects of the first President from Mindanao that will usher in what it called the country's "Golden Age of Infrastructure."


Sec. Tugade said that the Mega Manila Subway System is being eyed to be constructed by the fourth quarter of 2020, but may be initiated as early as 2019.

DOTr added further that the P227-Billion Project, which is "one of the very ambitious projects o the Duterte administration," would be funded by the government and through an official development assistance.

Sec. Tugade also noted that he promised to bring commuters from Quezon City to Taguig City in just 31 minutes once the subway system will take its full operation. The Philippine government would use Japan's tunneling expertise for the first ever subway system in the Philippines.


Once completed by the second quarter of 2024, the First Phase of the Subway System which will have 13 stops is expected to cater to 350,000 passengers daily.

The subway’s proposed stops are: Mindanao Avenue, North Avenue, Quezon Avenue, East Avenue, Anonas, Katipunan, Ortigas North, Ortigas South, Kalayaan, Bonifacio Global City, Cayetano Boulevard, Food Terminal Inc. and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

During the first visit of Prime Minister Abe in the Philippines, he pledged 1 trillion yen or P424 billion in investment and development assistance aid to the country over the next five years.
