Swedish Ambassador Confirms Saab Group Opens First Office in the Philippines

Ambassador Harald Fries of Sweden confirmed to the media that a major defense and civilian security company, Saab Group, maker of the world-renowned JAS 39 Gripen fighter aircraft, has just opened an office in the Philippines.

During an interview with the media, the Swedish Ambassador explained that most people associate Saab with cars but they no longer exist today, it is now a global security company.

Saab Group has been reported to be in the pole position to secure a deal to sell its JAS 39 Gripen fighter aircraft to the Philippine Air Force (PAF).

Aside from the fighter aircraft which is used by some of the world's most powerful Armed Forces, Saab Group could also offer coastal surveillance equipment and even submarines to the Philippines.

During a media roundtable held on the occasion of the 70th year of Sweden-Philippine Diplomatic Relations, Ambassador Fries said Swedish business is generally quite progressive when it comes to corporate social responsibility in terms of taking care of the environment,  as well as upholding labor and human rights.

The Swedish company Saab Group is not the only company based in Sweden that is interested in investing into the Philippines under the Duterte administration. Swedish company such as clothing giant  H&M, multinational networking and telecommunications equipment and services company Ericsson, and global customer experience specialist Transcom WorldWide AB are all “very advanced in nurturing good working conditions for these people that they hire.”

World-renowned furniture company IKEA has indeed decided to "come in" and will open its first store in the Philippines in the next few months.
