Lawmakers Who Voted "Yes" or "No" for the Passage of the "Death Penalty Bill"

The Lower House of the Philippine Congress approved on the third and final reading House Bill 4726 also known as the "Death Penalty Bill" on Tuesday, March 7, 2019. Based upon the final version of the bill, only drug-related offenses may only be punished by the death penalty.

Based upon the House records a total of 217 lawmakers voting for the bill while 54 lawmakers voted against the death penalty and 1 abstained from voting.

Some of the most prominent lawmakers who voted against the death penalty includes Deputy Speaker Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos and Pro-Life advocate Rep. Lito Atienza of Buhay Party-list.

During the previous month, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said that he would remove the posts of the lawmakers who will not vote for death penalty bill.

The death penalty bill passage is now in the hands of the Philippine Senate, some opposition lawmakers had said that they would question the bill once it is signed into law before the Supreme Court for violating the three-day notice rule in the 1987 Constitution.
