Atty. Panelo to Review the Amnesty Granted by Pres. Aquino to Sen. Trillanes

Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Atty. Salvador Panelo promised to review the amnesty given to Senator Antonio Trillanes IV for his involvement in the mutiny against former Pres. Arroyo. The veteran lawyer stated the case of Trillanes will soon undergo a review.

According to Atty. Panelo he would "go over" the case of Trillanes and check the facts to determine if the amnesy was valid or not. In an interview with the media, Atty. Panelo stated that there are some legal quarters expressing the same uncertainty or doubt on the case and he will personally go over the case.

The Presidential Legal Counsel noted that if the amnesty granted to Sen. Trillanes by no less than former Pres. Benigno S. Aquino, Panelo cautioned that Trillanes could be locked up in jail again.

Atty. Panelo was quoted as saying "Anything that is not the law can be precedent. It is always in the context of the law. So kung nagbigay siya ng amnesty na mali, hindi valid yo," Panelo said.

The close ally and former spokesman of Pres. Duterte made clear that the upcoming review of Sen. Trillanes' amnesty case was not a form of political persecution. "We are not in the business of persecuting people. We are in the business of prosecuting people who violate the law and as the President says it is his duty to protect and serve the people.

During the year 2010, in the month of October, former Pres. Aquino signed a Proclamation granting amnesty to Sen. Trillanes and dozens of soldiers involved in the three uprisings seeking to overthrow the Arroyo administration from 2003 to 2007. The proclamation removed any criminal liability of the mutineers.
