Tokyo Metro Backs P374-Billion Metro Manila Subway System


Tokyo Metro Company Ltd., the operator of subway lines in Tokyo, Japan is backing the construction of a possible subway system in Metro Manila. The company is also interested in making improvements to the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) to address traffic congestion in Metro Manila.


According to Atsushi Kamimura, manager for demand generation and marketing department at Tokyo Metro Co. Ltd. revealed that pursuing a plan to build a subway that would link the business centers of Makati, Pasay and Taguig.

Pres. Rody Duterte planned for a P374.5 billion Metro Manila subway, or Makati-Pasay-Taguig Mass Transit System Loop, considered as one of the big-ticket projects the current administration is looking to pursue.

The world-renowned Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has conducted a pre-feasibility study on the project and right now they are now working on a feasibility study.

JICA representative Susumu Ito earlier stated that the agency expects to complete the feasibility study within the year.

Atsushi Kamimura added further that Tokyo Metro is currently helping the JICA in the feasibility study for the project.
