Sen. Pacquiao's Motion Knocks Down All LP Members Chairmanship in Philippine Senate

Neophyte senator in the Philippine Upper House, Sen. Manny Pacquiao made a knock-out blow as he initiated the downfall of Liberal Party senators after they were stripped of all key positions in the chamber.

First who lost his position in the Upper Chamber is no other than Senate President Pro Tempore Sen. Franklin Drilon, one of the stalwarts of the Liberal Party, now a member of the minority bloc.

Sen. Manny Pacquiao made a motion to declare the position of Senate President Pro Tempore vacant followed by the motion of Sen. Pacquiao to declare the committee chairmanships in various committees headed by LP members as vacant.

When Sen. Pacquiao declared the post of Senate President Pro-Tempore vacant, his motion was seconded by Sen. Drilon and then approved by Senate President Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III.

The 17 senators who subsequently voted for Minority Leader Ralph Recto to replace Drilon for Senate President Pro Tempore are: Nancy Binay, Alan Cayetano, JV Ejercito, Francis Escudero, Win Gatchalian, Richard Gordon, Gregorio Honasan, Panfilo Lacson, Loren Legarda, Pacquiao, Francis Pangilinan, Grace Poe, Cynthia Villar, Joel Villanueva, Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri, Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III and Pimentel III.

Some committee chairmanships were also declared vacant and found their replacements with Sen. Bam Aquino, Chair of the Education committee replaced by Sen. Chiz Escudero; Sen. Kiko Pangilina from the Agriculture panel replaced by Sen. Cynthia Villar; Sen. Risa Hontiveros from the Health committee replaced by Sen. JV Ejercito.
