House Speaker Alvarez Slams CBCP Dubbed the Group as "Shameless Hypocrites"

Pres. Rody Duterte's closest ally in the House of Representative, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez slams the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) for the release of a pastoral letter that denounced the killing of drug suspects and even dubbed the religious group as "shameless hypocrites."

The CBCP vowed to continue speaking out against the government's war on drugs which resulted to the surrender of more than one million drug offenders in just six months as President.

In an interview with Inquirer, the lawmaker was quoted as saying "Sinners they are, the Catholic church has no moral ascendency to judge what is right and wrong," he stated.

The lawmaker even called the CBCP as "shameless hypocrites," after they released a statement through a Pastoral letter which was read by various Catholic churches nationwide.

The pastoral letter of the CBCP described the outright killing of drug suspects as "evil." They stated that "Any action that harms another (seriously) is a grave sin. To push drugs is a grave sin as is killing (except in self-defense).

We cannot correct a wrong by doing another wrong," it said, obviously referring to the multitude of illegal drug-related deaths under the Duterte administration.

The pastoral letter added further that "A good purpose is not a justification for using evil means. It is good to remove the drug problems but to kill in order to achieve this also wrong," it added.
