Chinese Tech Firms & American Company Eyes Entering Philippine Telecom Markets

The internet speed in the Philippines is considered as one of the lowest in Asia based upon the previous surveys by independent companies measuring Asia's interconnectivity. One of the main reason of slow connection was because of the duopoly by PLDT and Globe but recent news broke out that three Chinese telecom firms and an American technology company expressed interest in entering the country's telecom markets.

The National Telecommunications Commission announced earlier that they plan to offer an auction of surrendered and recalled spectrum frequencies this year under the Duterte administration.

NTC Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba stated in an interview during the sidelines of an event in Quezon City on February 14, that for the spectrum bidding planned in 2017, representatives of some foreign players have visited his headquarters to inquire about the auction.

The international telecom company who expressed interest in entering the Philippine telecom markets don't want to divulge their identities first but they already expressed their intentions to enter the Philippines.

Some representatives of those international companies already asked about the 60-40 restrictions of ownership under the Philippine Constitution. These companies are still looking for Filipino business partners.

So far a total of three Chinese telco companies and a US technology firm expressed their interests of investing in the Philippines.

The NTC is planning the auction to entice a 3rd major player into the country's telecommunications sector, challenging PLDT and Globe Telecom, which have been under fire for costly and slow internet services.

NTC and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) noted that the details of the spectrum auction have not materialized yet, but Cordoba said those that will be bid out are the surrendered frequencies from San Miguel Corp. and the 10 megahertz (MHz) 3G frequencies of Connectivity Unlimited Resources Enterprise (CURE) from PLDT Incorporated.
