Sen. Angara Confirmed Free Tuition for SUC's Approved in the 2017 National Budget (GAA)

Senator Edgardo Angara confirmed through a tweet sent to social media personality and Manila Bulletin writer Tonyo Cruz that a total of P8 billion was added to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to implement a FREE TUITION Fee for all State Universities and Colleges (SUC) students nationwide.

The P8 billion additional budget for CHED was approved by the Philippine Congress and Senate to be included in the 2017 General Appropriations Act (GAA) under the administration of Pres. Rody Duterte.

During the Lower and Upper House deliberations of the 2017 national budget House lawmakers originally wanted to include the P8.3 billion in the DPWH budget to provide for development projects in the ARMM, but senators wanted the fund to be allocated to the CHED instead.

The congressmen eventually conceded to the senators during the bicameral conference committee for the national budget.

For the very first time in the history of the Philippines, free tuition for college education is indeed an achievement of the Duterte administration who once promised during the election period that he will improve the country's education sectors with full support of the legislative department of the government.

In an exchange of message between Tonyo Cruz and Sen. Edgardo Angara Jr., the social media personality and blogger Tonyo Cruz asked that "if confirmed, free tuition at SUCs could be 2016 best news for the nation's peasants and working class families. Sen. Angara then replied that they just voted to include it to the national budget.
