DSWD Released P206 Million Assistance to Bagyong Nina Affected Areas

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) under the leadership of Secretary Judy Taguiwalo released a total of P206 million assistance to Bagyong Nina affected areas in the Bicol Region as well as Eastern Visayas.

According to the DSWD's latest reports the P206 million assistance covering over 580,000 family food packs, over 2,400 ready-to-eat meals, over 1,500 malong blankets, over 800 mosquito nets, over 800 blankets, and over 500 "dignity kits."

The much-needed assistance was released to affected areas just a few hours after Bagyong Nina made landfalls in Eastern Visayas and the Bicol Region.

Before the onslaught of Bagyong Nina, theDSWD pre-positioned the goods in areas that were expected to be affected by the storm.

Based on the records by DSWD, the NDRRMC and the LGU's in affected areas, over 22,600 families ore more than 95,000 individuals from 291 barangays in MIMAROPA, Region VI and Region VIII had been affected by Typhoon Nina.

Around 20,600 families were staying in 310 evacuation centers across affected areas. Bagyong Nina left over 16,100 passengers stranded at seaports in the Bicol Region, MIMAROPA and Eastern Visayas.

In an interview with the media, DSWD Sec. Judy Taguiwalo noted that relief supplies of the national government they had initially prepared were enough to respond to the needs of affected families for the meantime, but longer term goods and relief services would be needed to follow.

Sec. Taguiwalo was quoted as saying "Sa mga nasalanta ng bagyon, kung may pangangailanang kayo ng relief goods at iba pang mga non-food items, lumapit lamang po kayo sa inyong lokal na pamahalaan. Sapat po ang mga relief na naka-preposition sa kanila," she said.
