CHR Defends Edgar Matobato's Premature Departure from Senate Hearing

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in the Philippines defended the premature departure of Edgar Matobato from the Senate Hearing on extra-judicial killing during the Monday's session of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights.

In an interview with GMA News Online, CHR commissioner Roberto Cadiz said that it was wrong for Sen. Richard Gordon, to insinuate that "Matobato is trying to escape the Senate."

The CHR Commissioner was quoted as saying "The insinuation given by Gordon is Matobato is trying to escape the Senate. Matobato was there as early as 7 AM and he stayed up to past 7 PM and it was not his decision to leave but it was Sen. Trillanes who decided to bring him out because he is concerned with his security," Cadiz said.

During the Senate Hearing, Sen. Panfilo Lacson and Sen. Dick Gordon questioned the early departure of Edgar Matobato which was later admitted by Sen. Trillanes who reasoned out that for security reasons, he let Matobato depart as early as possible. Both Sen. Lacson and Sen. Gordon accused Matobato of trying to deceive the Senate.

The CHR explained further that they don't know the reasons of Sen. Gordon's outburst. Cadiz stated "Bakit nila biglang tinerminate kagabi ang hearing on the argument that Matobato is not credible?"

CHR Commissioner Cadiz added further that "Ang dami pang witnesses willing to testify, out witnesses are there ready at that time. They want to go home but but hindi ibig sabihin nun tinatakas namin ang witnesses, eh di sana hindi namin dinala sa Senado," he added.
