It was a perfect sendoff for the amateur standout before jumping to the professional ranks after a remarkable performance with NLEX in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup.
The MVP award is the first for the 22-year-old Alas in the Philippines.
He already won an MVP award in the Super Kung Sheung Cup in 2013 in Hong Kong while playing for the Gilas cadet team.
The highest individual award he got in home soil was a place in the Mythical First Team of the NCAA while he was still playing with Letran.
“Parang perfect sendoff,” the Letran star said. “Nag-champion tapos bonus pa ’yung MVP.”
It's time for him to bid goodbye to a prominent amateur career and will apply for the coming PBA draft.
Alas tallied 29.90 statistical points, beating ex-pros Reil Cervantes of Blackwater Sports and Jason Ballesteros of Jumbo Plastic Linoleum.
He is instrumentral in NLEX's domination in the Foundation Cup, with the Road Warriors winning all their 13 games including a sweep of Blackwater Sports in the finals.
NLEX won its sixth crown in the developmental league and is also expected to move to the PBA.
“Karamihan sa amin, huling pagsasama na namin. Masaya ako na last na namin tapos nag-champion pa. Bonus pa itong MVP,” Alas said.
“Personally, hindi ko makukuha ‘yung MVP kung hindi dahil sa pamilya ko, coach Boyet (Fernandez) at sa mga teammates ko. Pinapagalitan ako lagi ni coach Boyet pero tinututukan niya ako at pine-prepare ako sa PBA,” said Alas.
Now, we will await on how Alas fares in a much bigger stage which is the pro ranks.
Alas is expected to be drafted in the first round of the 2014 PBA Draft.
