Nonito Donaire Jr. snatched the WBA Featherweight Title from Simpiwe Vetyeka via technical decision

MACAU -

It may have not ended as what we have wanted to, but Filipino boxing hero Nonito Donaire, Jr. is now a five-division champion.

"The Filipino Flash" snatched the WBA Featherweight title from defending champion Simpiwe Vetyeka of South Africa via technical decision in front of a sellout crowd at the Cotai Arena of the Venetian Resort here.

“Maraming salamat sa lahat ng nandito. Pasensya na po,” said Donaire, adding his regret that he wasn’t able to give Filipino fans in the venue “a proper fight.”

The bout was stopped right before the bell sounded to begin in round 5 after the ring physician declared that Donaire is unfit to continue the bout because of a nasty cut in his left eyebrow.

The cut was due to a head butt by Vetyeka, and according to WBA rules, the fight will go to the scorecards to determine the winner.

Vetyeka was unfazed by Donaire's credential and exchanged blows right at the start of the opening bell.

They exchanged right hands in the opening round but it was Donaire who landed the final right at the end of the round.

Donaire was bleeding on the left eyebrow from a clash of heads which bothered him in the second. In the third, he backed Vetyeka with a left hook and a right straight.

Vetyeka never backed down and fired his jabs and right straights.

In the 4th, Vetyeka's uppercut sent Donaire on the back foot. Vetyeka seized the opportunity as he had Donaire on the ropes but The Filipino Flash sent Vetyeka down with a right swiftly followed by a left hook. Vetyeka barely survived the round.

Donaire had Vetyeka reeling as he tried to go for a knockout punch. The bleeding continued and the cut was checked by the ring side doctor.

The 4th round ended and the bleeding was rechecked and the fight was stopped going into the fifth.

Based on WBA rules the fight went to the scorecards.

The three judges - Levi Martinez, Raul Caiz,Jr and Francisco Martinez - had it 49-46 giving the WBA Featherweight super world title to Donaire.

Even Donaire admitted that he wanted a more convincing win and is open for a possible rematch with Vetyeka.

“I wanna give them that rematch,” said Donaire.

Donaire has captured his fifth world title in as many divisions, having previously won titles at flyweight, super flyweight, bantamweight and super bantamweight.
