Filipino World Champion Donnie Nietes pummels Mexican challenger Moises Fuentes in the 9th round to retain his title

Filipino world champion Donnie`Ahas’ Nietes proved to the world that he is indeed the future of Philippine boxing.

The long-tenured world champion sent Mexican Moises Fuentes down to the canvas three times in route to securing a devastating ninth round technical knockout to retain his World Boxing Organization (WBO) light-flyweight title in their rematch at the Mall of Asia Arena late Saturday.
Referee Robert Byrd called a halt of the fight at 2:56 of the mark after the tough Mexican challenger fell to the canvas for the third time courtesy of yet another cracking right from the champion.
The scintillating victory erased the doubts on Nietes' ability after the outcome of their first meeting last year ended in a majority draw that allowed Nietes to keep his 108-lbs belt.
"Ito `yung pagkakataon ko na maipakita at wala ng masabi pa ang mga tao na mahina pala si Donnie," said the 31-year-old champion from Murcia, Negros Occidental afterwards.
Nietes improved his record to 32-1-4, with 19 KOs as he remained on track of surpassing the seven-year record of the great Gabriel "Flash" Elorde as the longest reigning Filipino world champion.
Supporting Bouts
Earlier, one-time world title challenger Milan Melindo escaped a tough challenge from Mexican Martin Tecuapetla after he scored a majority victory in route to retaining his WBO International flyweight title.
Melindo won in the two judges’ scorecards, 116-112 and 115-113, but drew in the third, 114-114.
Former world title challenger Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista made a successful ring comeback by earning a unanimous decision victory over Sergio Villanueva also of Mexico.
Two judges saw it 96-94 for Bautista while the other one had it 97-93.
Bautista is coming out out from a one-year retirement after losing to Mexican Jose Ramirez by split decision April of last year in Davao.
