In a sudden turn of event, coach Luigi Trillo has stepped down as Alaska's top tactician in just two games into the PLDT Home Telpad Governors’ Cup.
The promising young coach will be succeeded by current assistant coach Alex Compton.
Trillo took over the head coaching job from Joel Banal during the latter part of the 2012 PBA season.
The reigning PBA Coach of the Year Trillo surprisingly called it quits after guiding the Aces to an even 1-1 win-loss record in the season-ending conference.
No specific reasons were specified regarding Trillo's resignation although Alaska team owner Wilfred Uytengsu described the team's last three conferences as a “challenging ride.”
“We are appreciative of Luigi’s efforts during his tenure as head coach and piloting the Aces to our 14th PBA title. But it has been a challenging ride the past three conferences,” Uytengsu said in an official statement.
“The Trillo name will always be fondly associated with the Aces owing to the fact that Joaqui Trillo served as team manager for 25 years as well as the Aces representative to the board of governors together with his son Luigi who were the only father/son (team manager-head coach) tandem to lead a franchise to a PBA title.”
Trillo was instrumental in giving back Alaska the crown in the Commissioner's Cup last season, the franchise’s first championship in the post-Tim Cone era.
However, after that success, the Aces has not been in the Finals and even the semifinals, as it succumbed early in the playoffs of the next three conferences.
The Aces had a great debut in the ongoing conference last week as it manhandled powerhouse team San Miguel Beermen, 94-87.
However, Alaska couldn't maintain its composure as it bowed to last conference cellar-dweller Globalport Batang Pier on Friday, 95-91.
The Aces played uncharacteristically and had turned the ball over 19 times in that game while the Batang Pier took advantage of that in route to a 20-3 fastbreak advantage.
The Aces is set to face an acid test as they tangle with powerhouse Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters on Monday as what will be Compton's debut as the new head coach.
The Aces must adopt right away to Compton's new system as this is only a single-round elimination tournament.
