Barako Bull confirms the appointment of Siot Tanquingcen as the new head coach

Barako Bull had confirmed reports that Siot Tanquinqcen will replace Bong Ramos as coach of the Energy in preparation for its campaign in the next conference's PBA Governor's Cup.

No other than Barako Bull team manager Raffy Casyao confirmed the latest coaching change for the franchise, which first reported on Thursday.

This is the Enegy's bid to improve its status from a darkhorse to a legitimate title contender as they will have a three-time PBA champion coach in Tanquincen at the helm.

“Yes, we have a new coach in Siot Tanquincen,” said Casyao, shortly after his brief breakfast meeting on Monday with Ramos.

Reason of Changes

Casyao disclosed that Barako's failure to reach the playoffs in the Commissioner's Cup is the main reason why they made the decision.

Barako Bull finished with a dismal 2-7 win-loss slate and was only good for ninth place in the single-elimination tournament and is just ahead of cellar-dweller GlobalPort who only wound up with a 1-8 record.

“It is a very tough decision for us to alter the direction of our team midway through the season, but we also fervently hope that change is necessary if we really intend to reach our goals,” said Casyao.

“We would like to thank Coach Bong Ramos for everything he has done for our team and our franchise,” added the amiable team official.

“Coach Bong is an exceptional God-fearing man and coach, which was showcased in four conferences with the team. We wish him the very best going forward,” he added.

The appointment of Tanquingcen was announced to the team during its Monday practice at the Gatorade Hoops Center in Mandaluyong.

Ramos took over from Junel Baculi last season but for a while served as an understudy to former national coach Rajko Toroman before getting full control of the team this season.

The veteran coach led the Barako to a quarterfinal finish and sixth place in the last Philippine Cup.

On the other hand, Tanquingcen served as coach of both San Miguel Beer and Ginebra before moving to Barako Bull last season to fill the team manager's role.

Casyao said no decision has been made on whether or not Ramos will stay with the team in another capacity.

"Actually, mutual agreement namin," Casyao said. "He is a professional to take everything in good stride."

Things may change for good for Barako Bull next season following this development.
