He was ill indeed as he was rushed to the hospital shortly after the game.
Butch had the stomach flu and was visibly ailing during the game. He had to be subbed out during key stretches and was seen throwing up into a bucket at the Meralco bench.
“He was complaining of stomach cramps before the game and it got worse during the game. I just did not want to risk it. He still wanted to play, but I told him that I didn’t want him to collapse inside the court,” said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio.
Butch was coming off a monster game in Meralco’s comeback win over Air 21, scoring 40 points and grabbing 31 rebounds last Sunday.
But the 6-foot-11 big man was a not his usual self against Rain or Shine, finishing with just 11 points and 13 rebounds.
During one stretch, Butch was seen crying on the bench as he helplessly watched his team struggle without him
Meralco’s record fell to 3-3 with just three games to go in the team’s schedule in the PLDT Home TVolution Commissioner’s Cup.
With Butch’s health uncertain, Gregorio has the choice of bringing in replacement import Darnell Jackson, who has been in town as an emergency option.
But Gregorio said making that decision isn’t straight forward.
“It’s always been an option, but it’s not a solid decision yet. I’ll be talking to the management tomorrow. There’s no rush to make that decision. The more important thing right now is to make sure Brian is OK,” said Gregorio.
“I’m not a fairweather coach. I know what he had done for our team. We’re in a very good situation primarily because of him, we’re 3-3, we’re in the middle of the pack. Some of the things he had done for us are well appreciated. In one bad game and because of his condition, we don’t want to abandon him and all of a sudden, he has no friends.”
We'll wait in the coming days if Butch would be replace by Jackson despite his monter numbers.
