Anjo Caram: Meralco's savior at manning the point in the PBA Commissioner's Cup

With injuries hobbling the backcourt of the Meralco Bolts in the ongoing
PLDT Home TVolution Commissioner’s Cup, they badly need someone who can man the point guard position steadily.

A rookie in Anjo Caram is a revelation with starting point guard Mike Cortez out for the conference and top playmaker Jared Dillinger battling illness.

The pint-sized playmaker out of San Beda stepped up big and helped them earn their first win against the Alaska Aces, 86-79.

The Bolts loss their debut against powerhouse San Miguel Beermen in a rout, 94-76.

“You’re not gonna get a lot of minutes if our usual starters or point guards are there, but in the absence of Mike and the absence of Jared, Anjo Caram really played well, scoring, setting the table for us and defending,” said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio.

Caram, a third-round pick in last year’s draft, ably quarterbacked Meralco in the team’s victory over Alaska.

“I just have to step up, ganun lang naman. Binibigyan ako nina Coach (Ryan Gregorio ng break so I’m just grabbing the opportunity,” said the former San Beda Red Lions sentinel.

“Ako naman, I just have to be ready anytime, hindi mo malalaman kelan dadating yung time, so luckily dumating, so I made the the most out of the opportunity.”

Despite measuring a shade below 5-foot-7, Caram doesn’t see his height, or lack thereof, particularly as a detriment.

“For me, may advantage yung maliit ka, kasi mabilis ka. Pero nasa puso rin yan, kung gaano kalaki puso mo maglaro,” he said.

And we might see another version of Eman Monfort in Caram, who uses his quickness and aggressiveness to overshadow his height disadvantage.
