San Miguel set to trade Cabagnot for Global Ports' Mercado

After reviving its former name and its coach, San Miguel Beer has now shifted its attention to altering its roster.

According to a reliable source, a big one-on-one trade is set to be consummated hours – or days – from now by San Miguel flagship franchise that will have starting guard Alex Cabagnot swapping places with Global Port's high-scoring guard Sol Mercado.

The trade papers have already been signed and delivered to the PBA Commissioner's Office for approval, the source added.

“I think the team is working on a couple of trades right now. Baka in the next 24 hours,” said the San Miguel Beer source. “Pero dadalhin na sa PBA office 'yan. One-on-one lang yan.”

Spin.ph, the source of the said rumor, tried to contact San Miguel and Global Port officials, but both declined to comment on the matter.

The trade comes in the wake of San Miguel’s decision to replace Gee Abanilla as head coach in favor of Biboy Ravanes, who will have American Todd Purves by his side as 'active consultant.'

The same source bared that former coach Abanilla, who led the team to the finals and a semifinal stint in his two conferences in charge, was promoted to a team manger’s role replacing Siot Tanquincen, who up to now is still without a new post.

Before that, the franchise has also dropped the Petron name.

Another source bared it was new Globalport coach Pido Jarencio who approved the trade first as he once handled Cabagnot when he was still a deputy coach at Petron.

Meanwhile, Mercado has reportedly been offered to several teams before San Miguel took an interest on him, paving the way for the Fil-Am guard’s move to a third team in less than 12 months.

Once approved, the trade will see Chris Ross taking over the starting point guard chores for the Petron/SMB franchise with Mercado completing a deadly set of wingmen with Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz.

On the other hand, Cabagnot will be a veteran presence in a GlobalPort backcourt that in the last Philippine Cup relied mostly on rookies RR Garcia and Terrence Romeo.
