Meralco Sparks Advanced to Singapore Cup Quarterfinals

Phil Younghusband led Loyola Meralco Sparks made an impressive returns to the Singapore Cup in a remarkable win as they hammered out 3-0 rout of Harimau Muda B of Malaysia at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore on Sunday night, May 27, 2013.

The Meralco Sparks the only Philippine Team last year invited to the prestigious regional competition in Singapore keep their experienced intact as they defeated Malaysia’s under 20-national team.

One of Azkals most popular player, Phil Younghusband, broke into the scoring column with a penalty kick off an Ashmawi Yakin’s red card in the 18th minutes of the game.

The goal was added with another score from Loyola Meralco’s Korean import Jan Joo Wong, 21 minutes after the first goal of Younghusband. The first half was dominated by the Sparks with 2-nil in scorecard.

Phil Younghusband added another goal with his magical performance at around 81st minutes which put the Harimau Muda B, a regular fixture in the Singapore’s S. League, ended their journey with the loss.

The win of the Sparks assured that at least a club from the Philippines made it to the quarterfinals, the Sparks made history during last year’s competition as they entered into the top 4 teams.

Meanwhile fellow Filipino club, the defending United Football League Champion, Global FC will try to join the Sharks but they will face one of the toughest team in the competition, the reigning Singapore Cup titlist, Warriors FC.
